ok..not so much a catch phrase as a new, all encompassing diss to anyone I don't like.
are you ready??
"She has a big ass and rainbow earrings"
On the train station on the way home last night after dinner, a teenager was talking about another girl on the train who had been sitting by them, and by her account, was talking about everyone on the train. Her rage at this girl and her disparaging remarks about the other train passengers led to a highly charged diatribe by the other girl, who was talking to her boyfriend and another girl. It was the LONGEST sentence full of insults I had ever heard, and her description of the girl in question started out as "She had a big ass and rainbow earrings" and continued on from there including a thorough and disparaging description of all of her clothing and accessories, her hair and body type and her actions on the train. All in one sentence. John Steinbeck would have been proud.

Audrey, Fresh Bread, and How to Make Oatmeal
William's Tuesday morning breakfast. I still have failed to make his oatmeal, so it's beacon, toast and neenuh for breakfast. Pictured here is the sleepy-head watching Sesame Street. To his right is his Care-Full-Tee Cup. I always tell him "be careful" when he uses a regular cup, so this has morphed into carefulty, which might be a hybrid of careful and casualty. :)

Because I decided not to put off cooking the oatmeal another day, here's how I make a weeks worth of steel cut oats.
Ingredients: 2 cups of steel cut oats. 1/2 c wheat germ (optional), 8 cups of water
Bring the 8 cups of water to a full, rolling boil. While waiting for it to boil, measure the oats and the wheat germ into a container so they are ready to go when it's time to add them.

When the water reaches begins the full boil, use a whisk to stir in the grains, stirring as you pour and continue stirring for a few moments after. Let them return to a boil.

Once they reach a boil, stir once more, remove from heat, and cover. Let sit for a couple of hours (or overnight if it's bedtime). Uncover and stir to incorporate the condensation. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Whenever you're ready for oatmeal, put some in a bowl, add your sweetener and milk, and microwave until hot. We add raisins to William's before heating, and cinnamon applesauce if we've got any. YUM! :)
Audrey came to visit during nap time so her mom and dad could go see Harry Potter!! The boys were super excited!!!

of course, she had just been here the day before, so it wore off quickly and they all fell asleep. :)

While they were all napping, I baked some bread. When William was a baby, he REALLY loved to just eat a big slice of fresh bread as a snack, and Aldous is no different!

For dinner Tuesday night, I made the boys individual pizzas on whole wheat pitas. They really love these, as you can see by Aldous' messy face. He was SO messy he went right from dinner to the shower!!

He really loves the shower!!

Today was a busy day. I went to IKEA, bought some small bowls to go with the kids' other plastic ware and some towels for the soaker in diapers. That's my cheap source of terry yardage: the IKEA bath towel for $1.49. It was a fun trip.
This afternoon William and Aldous were having fun with the "wetters" and William spelled this. I said "what does that say?" and he said, pretending to sound it out, "kuh, kuh, kuh, quack!"
so there you have it, folks.

While at IKEA, I spotted this red highchair, and on my quest to find the perfect high chair, I had considered another IKEA model, but had not seriously considered this highchair in the past b/c it was only available in white. WELL, today, I saw the red one, and decided this was the highchair for us!!! Aldous loves it!!

He tried it out with some cheerios.

William saw me taking pictures of Aldous and decided to add his cheeseface.

I made a shirred sundress last night and this afternoon. I thought I was having trouble with the elastic, but it turns out I wasn't. :) I was just impatient, but because of my inability to delay gratification, I ripped out two rows of shirring FOUR times.
Please note William in the background. As Doug was taking my pic, I hear William behind me saying cheese, so I laughed!! I can't believe he's cheesefacing my sundress pic!! ARG!!! He's like WALDO with that face: it's everywhere!!

and again. There are a gazillion rows of shirring, and the whole dress was simple to make. Maybe I would like wider straps on the next one? I don't know. This is a Robert Kaufman fabric I found at the Golden D'or. Notice the little hams trying to get in my pic??

Blueberries, Beasts and Babies, OH MY!!!, and tacos.
Today was a busy, busy day!!! William had Mother's Day Out and we usually walk to that, but it raining when we got up. By the time we had to leave it was a down pour, so we had to drive. Bleck!

It's only a block away, really, across the park, but too far to walk in the rain. AND right now they're re-landscaping the park so we have to walk ALL the way around it.
After dropping off William, Aldous and I went grocery shopping. We returned home to this, on the kitchen floor. A SNAKE!!!
Very sad. This is only about 5 inches long. I picked it up and put it in a container, but I did notice it was a bit mangled and had a cat-tooth shaped puncture wound on it's side. I had hoped it would live long enough for William to see it, but alas it was not long for this world and died about an hour later. RIP, Mr. Snake.

At the grocery story we bought a lot of blueberries. I bought 6 of those 11oz containers, however many that is. I cleaned them all and rinsed them in this colander. This is the colander that William calls the "hat". In fact, when it's missing from it's place in the pantry, I ask him what he's done with the big hat, and he will fetch it from where ever he's hidden it.
This is a lot of blueberries.

I'm trying a new recipe so I only make as much as it says, in case they don't turn out that great I won't have wasted my 25 bushels of blueberries, or 6 pints, whatever. Also, the recipe didn't mention the yield so I was cautious, as I only had a few jars available, and nine lids. ACK!!
Here's the recipe for Blueberry Preserves
*Read thru the whole narrative for changes to recipe method*
5 c fresh blueberries, stemmed and washed *duh..
2 t cider vinegar
2 1/4c sugar
1/2 t ground cinnamon
1/2 t ground allspice (I didn't have any allspice, so I used nutmeg)
1/4 t ground cloves
Combine all ingredients in a large stainless pot. Cook to the jell point, or until desired thickness. Stir frequently. Ladle into hot clean jars leaving 1/4" head space. Process 14 in hot water bath.
combine all in the stainless pot.

Grind your spices!!! I got a new "spice" grinder the other day, thankfully!! WOOT!!

Ok, I stirred this a bit and it seemed too dry or something.

so, I used the potato masher to mash a few of the berries to release the juices.

It still seemed dry, so I added 1/4c water.

After they had cooked a bit and were beginning to break down, I added 1/4 w to a half package of sure-jell and then poured that in. I was hoping to have some intact berries in these preserves so I didn't want to cook it until they all disintegrated. The sure-jell helped, and it thickened up a bit.

While the berries simmered a bit, I sorted my rings and lids....my lame NINE lids...where do you buy these things, here in the city? Anyone know??

Putting the rings and lids on to boil. The jars are all in the dishwasher, getting clean and hot!!

While I'm waiting for the lids to boil, I read this on the Sure-jell instructions. It gives instructions for the Inversion Method, which eliminates the need for the hot water bath. ROCK ON!! Sounds great!!!

Still waiting for lids and rings to boil, and jars to finish their cycle in the dishwasher. On hold.

Finally! I fill the jars: This makes ALMOST four half-pints!! wow, that's a lot of rigamarole for four jars!!

And upside down they go!!! Sadly, this did not make them seal and I had to do a hot water bath anyway. what a pain!!

These are all the berries I DIDN'T use today!! WOW!!! I think I have enough for a double batch of those preserves, but I'll have to buy more lids!!

Terah is learning to sew!!!
This is her first project: a halter top for Audrey!!! Here she is modeling it for us!
Notice the button, hand sewn, the top-stitching, and that great casing for the elastic!!!

A closer view of the elastic casing and top-stitching.

The front has two darts, and top-stitching!

Recycled Maternity Tops
I had so many maternity tops with horizontal stripes, it was unreal...I mean, who wants to wear horizontal stripes when they're pregnant? how hideous!! And rather than donate these to someone, I decide it was better to remove them from circulation. It's really the only humane thing to do.
I made a diaper for William, with a star wars applique. It will have hook and loop tab closures, but I didn't get to add the tabs before bedtime, and I didn't want to disturb anyone with my sewing.

And, because I hope he won't be wearing diapers too much longer, I made a pair of underpants. These have ONE layer of Zorb in them in the codpiece. I used the same Jalie pattern I use for Doug's underpants. In fact, I cut out one pair of underpants exactly like these (sans the zorb), but I've not sewn them up. tee hee.....I can't wait to see Doug and William in their matching underpants!!

Here's an action shot!!! This is the only "non-cheeseface" pic....*sigh*

The backside. He's standing like this because, although his back is to me, he's doing the "cheeseface".

Cheeseface

Another cheeseface.

So, our busy day ended with a dinner of soft tacos, rice pilaf (Near East brand mix) and chili beans, with yummy warm-this-morning-when-I-bought-them-fresh tortillas from Wal-mart.
My tacos
1lb ground beef
1 small can diced green chilies
salt
pepper
garlic powder
American chili powder
ground cumin
Add all spices to taste, and brown meat in a large skillet. When halfway done, add the can of green chillies, then brown until all liquid disappears from the pan. Add 1/4 c water, turn heat on low, cover and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat and serve. Yummy! You can also add very finely diced potatoes in when you add the green chilies.
After dinner, we headed to the YMCA to swim and exhaust the boys. It worked.

Stain Soak Recipe
My most requested recipe is my SUPER STAIN SOAK!!!!
This removes: stains on diapers, food and breastmilk/spit-stains, blood, some mildew (may have to do a second soak), grease, regular ol' dirt and mud, kid markers, kid paint, mystery stains, and stains from stored clothing items. If you soak an item and the stain **mostly** comes out, just soak it again and the remainder may come out. It's worth a try.
Does not remove: permanent marker, acrylic or latex paint, nail polish.
IMPORTANT: read the instructions. read the instructions. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!
1c. Purex 2 powder (sold next to the Clorox 2 and Biz, in a box about $3 or less)

1c. Dishwasher Powder (I use generic, $2 per box)

5 gal bucket. (if your bucket is 2 or 3 gal, use 1/2 c of the above powders)
INSTRUCTIONS:
*Put powders in bucket.
*Add the hottest tap water you have to bucket.
*Add stained clothes.
*Ignore until next washing day (up to a week), but add more stained things to the bucket as you come across them.
*Dump the entire contents of the bucket (soapy water AND clothes) into the washer.
*Wash, w/o adding more soap, of course.
*Before drying, inspect stuff and throw back into the bucket for round two (I rarely have a round two)
*** Use caution when soaking items w/ bright red or navy blue trim as they may bleed. All other stuff is fine.
FOR HE users: wring out soaked items, discard soaking water. Do not add more soap to your machine. Wash as usual.
RANT: (you knew one was coming, right?)
For around $5 you can make at least 10 batches of Super Stain Soak, which works better than ANY stain remover I have tried on the market today, and I'm pretty sure I've tried them all! I mean, I have five kids!!
Oxi clean laundry stain remover is more than $5 for 24 oz
Spray and Wash is $4 for 22oz
That's crazy!

Fuffins!!!, Blueberry Muffins
Fuffins!!!
It's July and blueberries are in abundance!!

I picked up a bunch of them on my last grocery trip. This morning, after narrowly escaping death, William helped me bake some blueberry muffins, which he adorably calls "fuffins!!"
I was thinking today about how I shop and organize my kitchen. I keep a small dry erase board on my fridge, and I have a goal to keep basic baking necessities on hand at all times. The minute something looks low, I write it down, and replace it immediately. That way, baking isn't a huge chore requiring a lot of forethought and planning, and doesn't require any special trips to the store. Things I just always have are flour, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, milk, butter in sticks, vanilla, powdered sugar, raisins, rolled oats, peanut butter, baking powder and soda, and cornmeal.
William is currently making this face EVERY time I take his picture. He scrunches all up and says "cheese" which is sort of cute, but mostly annoying.

The muffins in the oven....we can hardly wait. I set the time for shortest time, but when it went off they weren't done. William collapsed on the floor in front of the oven, sobbing in despair.
These overflow and are very sticky, so I use the old ugly muffin tins for these. These are oddly sized, I think, because while they are bigger than the regular muffins tins I use for cupcakes, they are smaller than the jumbo "Texas-sized" ones...so??

Finally finished! oh, YUM!! These have a topping of brown sugar, butter, flour and cinnamon. Because my spice grinder has broken, I had no ground cinnamon (but plenty of sticks!!) but it really didn't matter!

Here's the inside, delicious! We used double the amount of blueberries that the recipe calls for since they are in abundance.

William saying cheese again. *sigh* HOW LONG DOES THIS PHASE LAST?????

Enjoying the fuffins!

Aldous enjoyed sharing a muffin with me and was pretty sad when it was gone.
